My Five Adopted Parakeets

By
[http://www.rightresellebooks and http://www.homemakerscafe.com] Daphne Hittell
*There are local yahoo groups that attempt
recycle to others before last resort of throwing items
away. Search freecycle for a group near you. Pets
to adopt are often posted too! Try this wonderful group
and your local animal shelter if you are looking for a
pet!*
I have adopted 5 parakeets from various
Yahoo Group FreeCycle members. I have 3 girls, Sapphire,
Diamond, and Daisey. I also have 2 boys, LeStat and
Lewis. The birds were already named. They came with
cages and toys. I love my birdies!
I have a very
large metal white cage. YES, the birdies get along with
each other. The boys have words once in awhile, but they
did that when I first got them. They were together in
one cage from the same home! I put the boys in the big
cage, then I put the other two cages together with doors
open to the open entrances of the large cage. *I only
did this when I could observe them incase of fights*
The first bird to go to a new cage was Sapphire! She
would go between them all. After a week, all five were
home in the large cage! I moved favorite perches, toys,
food dishes, etc to big cage. I have read so many
negative posts on parakeet forums about mixing the
birdies, so I was amazed at the easy transformation!
Sapphire and LeStat are the only couple!
I keep
their cage on top of a entertainment center that I use
as a book case in family room. They have a view of all
our human activities! I also move cage by open blinds
sometimes for them to look out. I also use this area to
work online from home, twins homework area, and great
view of kitchen and twins playroom. The birdies keep us
all company.
At times I open front panel of cage
so the birds can have freedom. They each have their own
patterns of where they go and what they do when out of
cage. Lewis will stay out for hours, perched on a china
hutch or fireplace mantle. The rest only stay out ten
minutes or so and return to cage. *ONLY allow them
out when you know your home doors will not be used! I do
not take them out! They only come out if they choose. I
usually allow this after the children are asleep and I'm
quietly working on my laptop.*
Parakeets are
easy pets to watch over. I keep cage clean and make sure
they have food and water. I added three small branches
going thru cage as natural perches. They have swings and
other perches also. Bird supplies are not expensive.
Warning....more the birds, more the feathers to get off
carpet! That's the only disadvantage I've found!
Bones for Dogs - Are They Good Or Bad?
 By
[http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jeremiah_O'Connell] Jeremiah
O'Connell
We used to get lots of bones for dogs.
Practically every cartoon showing a dog reveals that
dogs like bones. But then, some time ago, veterinarians
said that bones for dogs are not good. And all of a
sudden, we stopped giving our dogs some of their
favorite foods in the world.
So Which Is It
-Bones Or No Bones Actually, there is a disagreement
over the health effects of bones for dogs. Are they good
or bad? Some veterinarians cling to the belief that
bones for dogs may cause some risks, while others
believe bones are actually essential to a dog’s diet.
The Good Thing About Bones According to Tom
Lonssdale, BVSc, MRCVS, a veterinarian in New South
Wales, Australia and author of Raw Meaty Bones Promote
Health, raw bones are but a natural, healthy food for
dogs.
Bones for dogs, especially those that
contain some meat, provide your canine pet with protein.
What’s more, they contain a balance of essential
minerals which your dog needs.
"They also serve
as nature’s toothbrush," Lonssdale adds. According
to Lonssdale in his book, providing your canine friend
with bones for dogs helps prevent periodontal disease
and can even reverse its effects. Lonssdale further
states, "My No. 1 safety warning would be to read up
about dietary needs before taking on the responsibility
of keeping a carnivore."
"Bones for Dogs are Bad
for Canine Health" On the other hand, another
veterinarian, Ed Sullivan, DVM, of Animal Medical
Center, a 24 hour emergency clinic located in
Bellingham, Washington, says the exact opposite about
bones for dogs. In fact, he outright advises against
bones.
He says, "The potential for complications
is always there, including bones lodged in the mouth or
throat, intestinal obstruction, fractured teeth, and
digestive upset."
Then again, Sullivan adds that
he rarely encounters dogs with injury or illness due to
eating bones for dogs. He says, "We see way more
complications with toys, rocks, plastic bags, clothing,
and string than with bones."
So What’s the Moral
of the Story? The important thing to remember then is
to distinguish between the good bones and the bad. Based
on the discussion above, it appears that your dog stands
to gain more by eating the occasional bone than not
avoiding it completely. Accidents involving bones are
rare so it should not stop you from trying to provide
your dog with as much nutrients and minerals as only a
bone can provide.
Just make certain that the
bones you get from the butcher or the grocer are not
sharply angled or sawed. Instead, try beef tails and
ribs, necks of lamb, chicken, turkey and beef. And get
bones for dogs that contain lots of meat attached to
them but the fat removed.

Adult Cats are Fun Too - Adopt An Older Cat
 By
[http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kate_Tilmouth] Kate
Tilmouth
You've finally made the decision to
adopt a cat, you've dreamt about it for quite some time.
Visualising your cute new little kitten playing around
the floor and looking up at you with those big baby
blues. What could possibly go wrong, after all it's only
a tiny kitten. But have your really thought about how
much time, effort and trouble a kitten really is. A
kitten is packed full of energy and curiosity and will
cry for attention, scratch the furniture, bite and
urinate everywhere until it is litter box trained, and
will run around the house getting into all sorts of
scrapes and trouble. And it's up to you to look after
them 24/7. If you've got the time and dedication to look
after a kitten, great, but if not, why not think about
adopting an adult cat.
A lot of potential
adopters seem to think of an adult cat as second best,
as if they are defective or worn out like a second hand
car. That's just not the case. Most adult cats have
found themselves in animal shelters from no fault of
their own. They may have out lived their owner, their
owners may have moved to somewhere that doesn't allow
pets, become lost or someone in the family may have
become allergic to them. The reasons are far to numerous
to list them all. The cats themselves are perfectly
healthy animals, bristling with fun and energy and
simply looking for a caring loving home.
Adopting an adult cat has many advantages.
Remember an older cat has already developed its
personality. So you will know what kind of pet they will
be and whether or not they will suit your family. Many
people go for the cute little kitten; only to find out
that they grow into a very shy and non-playful cat that
likes to spend all it's time away from the family.
That's fine if that's what you want, but too many people
decide that this is not for them and returns the cat to
the shelter. Rejection is a very harsh punishment for
the cat just because you didn't take the time to think
about what sort of cat would be the right pet for your
family.
An older cat will also be less demanding
of your time than a kitten and will require less
supervision, well after the first few weeks anyway. They
will be able to spend time alone when you are out of the
house without getting into too much trouble and
hopefully will already be litter trained.
There
are also many benefits for older owners in adopting an
adult cat. Adult cats are much calmer and more likely to
want to spend some quiet time sitting on your lap for
strokes and purring. Studies have shown that cats can
have a real health benefit for humans in reducing their
stress levels and blood pressure. I can't image an
energetic curious kitten being as good for your stress
levels somehow.
Many worry about health problems
and vet bills for the older cat. Usually when you are
adopting a cat from an animal shelter they will be able
to let you know if the cat has any underlining medical
conditions and what it is likely to cost. Many will even
provide you with free medical treatment for your cat if
they over 10 years old as an incentive for more of the
older cats to be re-homed.
Cats can live well
into their late teens and even early twenties with all
the advances in food nutrition and medical treatments.
So that 12 year old cat waiting in the animal shelter
for a good home is still a good bet and will still be
able to provide you with many years of fun and love. Our
own cat is now 14 years old and still behaves like a
playful youngster and keeps us entertained for hours.
It can be a very rewarding experience to adopt
an older cat, not only because of the pleasure they will
give you over the years but also in the knowledge that
you have provided a loving home for what was probably a
very frightened and confused cat, who had no idea why he
had lost his family.

care tips can be found at our site

Horse Pictures - Take Great Photos of Your Horse Or
Pony
By
[http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gayle_Norbury] Gayle
Norbury Getting organized Before you rush off
with your camera, think about the things you'll need to
help you get great pony pics. They include: - your
camera - a memory card - treats for your pony -
something to attract your pony's attention – like a
bell, favourite treats or even a plastic bag to
rustle - grooming kit
Camera settings Not
boring - but absolutely necessary! If it’s your first
time and you're really only practicing, then set your
camera to take the maximum number of pictures. You'll
want to take lots so you can find out what works and
what doesn't as well as the kind of horse pictures you
like best.
If you already know what you're doing
and are taking these for real - then do set your camera
to the highest resolution. It will mean you can take a
lower number of pics but the quality will be better and
you will be able to get them printed to a larger size -
so it’s worth doing.
There’s nothing worse than
taking a brilliant photo of your pony and not being able
to print it to a decent size! Low resolution images
don't print incredibly well above 6"x4". So the rule is
- max resolution whenever possible!
Take a
friend It’s more fun and definitely easier to take
pictures of your horse with a friend to help attract his
attention. Get them to stand just to the side and behind
you. Once you're both positioned and your camera is
ready, get your friend to ring the bell or whatever
you've brought with you. That way, when he looks up,
you'll get the ideal shot of him looking towards you
with his head up and his ears forward.
Groom
First You probably won't want a full groom before
taking photos of your horse or pony, but it is a good
idea to take off any major stains and mud round his face
and neck. Take lots of photos This is where your
extra memory comes in handy. The more photos you take,
the better you'll get at it. The other reason for taking
lots of photos is that when you come to look at them
later, you can erase all the ones where he blinked as
you clicked the button and still have some to use!
Try different angles Take pictures of the whole
of your horse including tail and hooves! Then try just a
head shot. Don't forget to use your zoom, if you have
one, to get in close. And don't forget to check out the
background before you click. If there's an ugly building
behind - move!. Lots of people forget that they can move
when they have a camera in their hands. Just taking a
few steps to the left or right can sometimes result in a
much, much better photo.
Have fun When you or
your pony get bored- stop! You can always have another
go another time. Above all, have fun taking pictures of
your pony.

Is Having A Ferret As Pet A Good Idea Or Should You
Stick With Cats And Dogs?
 By
[http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Graham_Grant] Graham
Grant
So you have decided to have a ferret as a
pet. This is not an unusual decision as ferrets make
great pets and a lot of owners can attest to this. Pets
have been domesticated for the past 2000 years after
all, and were introduced to the North Americas as pets
as long as 300 years ago. They can be trained just like
cats and dogs and make for great and joyous companions
for the right kind of household and family.
Like
any other pets ferrets require the same kind of
attention like exercise, proper social training - just
like cats they can be taught to use the litter tray -
and veterinary care.
Some jurisdictions do not
allow ferrets to be kept as pets as in the case of New
Zealand. The argument against ferrets held by such
jurisdictions lies in the fact that ferrets do have
fairly sharp teeth. But this is something that can
easily be circumvented using proper training. Indeed
ferrets can nip, but only in self defence if, for
example, they are cornered. This is just a natural
survival instinct that all animals and even humans have
in circumstances where a threat is sensed.
Ferrets are like small children, very playful
and exuberant so if you have both it is a good idea to
closely supervise them when in close contact, but this
goes without saying even if they are in contact with any
other pets. For older children ferrets do, in fact, make
really great pets!
Here are also some
interesting and useful facts you should take into
account should you decide on a ferret as your pet:
Ferrets are great sleepers and can sleep for 18
hours a day. But they will most likely be wakeful at the
times you are used to feed them or interact with them.
They can be found napping in places you would
least expect, so check very carefully behind that
cushion before you sit down in front of the tv or to
read a book.
As mentioned they are very jolly
pets to have and will play with another ferret (if you
bought more than one) without much supervision amusing
themselves and you.
Their lifespan is typically
6 to 8 years and sometime up to 12 years. With the right
care (see end of article) there is no reason why their
typical lifespan can't be extended even more.
They are kind of blind but make up for it by
having a strong sense of smell and hearing.
They
belong to the weasel family and are related to mink,
skunks, otters and badgers. But be aware they are the
only member of this family (also known as Mustilidae)
that are possible to keep and be domesticated.
Ferrets make for the ideal pet if you are
looking for an alternative to having a dog or a cat.
Like them they can easily be domesticated to become a
member of your extended family. And unlike cats and
dogs, you will not have to worry about annoying your
neighbours with loud dog barks or their garden (and
yours) being used as a toilet.

Teach Your Goat to Lead
 By
[http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Asai_Thambi] Asai
Thambi
Every animals need to at least learn to
walk on a lead. It’s much easier to mover individual
animals from one paddock to another, if it walks
silently – not fighting you every step of the way. It’s
better to put an animal on a trailer or truck when you
sell it if you’re not pulling and jerking, or worse
lifting and carrying it. In case, your animal requires
medical attention, your vet would greatly appreciate
having a well-trained goat to treat.
Once the
goat learns definitely we are not going to torture it
again and again. You can put a lead on the goat’s neck
and tie it to a fence or gate. Remember never, ever
leave your tied goat unattended; this could lead your
goat with broken neck. While tied, you need to brush
them, make them familiar to being handled. Further do
rub your hands on their backs, up and down legs, and
give them a good feel by tickling their bellies. You
could also gently rub the neck the shoulders; this has a
very cheering effect on the goat.
For smaller
goat, you can put two pans of food on the ground about
30 feet apart. Walk up to the goat to the first pan of
food. Just allow him to eat for couple of seconds and
then take the food away and walk the goat to second pan.
Repeat the same trip for few times, after that take a
longer route from one pan to another. The advantage of
this process is not to force the goat to go among the
pans but to get them to want the reward. And through
this process they learn how to walk.
When the
training is over for the show and after the goat has
mastered the art of walking, you can walk several yards
then stop the goat and “set it up” so that it is
standing “square”. Through this you make you goat
familiar to have others check their bite or inspect
udders. Another technique is to put a long leash or rope
on the goat permitting it to run from you with and you
following. This is somewhat easier than dragging your
goat behind you if you could keep up with the goat. Once
the goat get used to you tagging along behind, slowly
shorten the lead until the goat walks next to you.
Yet another technique is to use a big trained
goat and let it be a trainer to a smaller one to lead by
attaching the two together. To us, this is the anyhow a
least effective method of training. If you try this
technique, don’t never leave your goat alone while
tethered; they would get into all sorts of problem that
may lead to injury or death. Once your goat is broken to
lead, it does not forget. Teach them when they are
young, and hold them when they are old.

What to Look for when Choosing a Bearded
Dragon?
 By
[http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Florian_Ross] Florian
Ross
Many times people get a beardie and just
love the creature but unfortunately the animal dies in a
couple of weeks or months. In fact, statistics show that
more than 70% of beardies die in their first year of
life, if they live together with a new owner.
So, when you want to get a Bearded Dragon, you
should look it over carefully. Some things you should
notice right away is how alert and active the Dragon is.
Do not buy a Beardie which looks to be lethargic and is
unable to lift its head.
Before deciding which
Beardie to buy, do ensure that you check them for sores,
burns, external parasites or any deformities. One of the
most important things is to look at the size of the
Beardie. If too young, bearded dragons can be very
fragile and more apt to become ill or overly stressed.
It is much easier to care for a more developed Bearded
Dragon. If you are a beginner owner it is highly
recommended to start with a juvenile rather than a
hatchling.
Good signs When buying a dragon, look
for good signs. This is a good start. If the dragon can
claim these signs, then you might have found your new
pet: 1. No missing toes or tail nip 2. A tail
curled up towards the head 3. An active animal or
basking 4. Eyes are clear and open.
Bad
signs Also, check for these bad signs: 1.
Lethargy 2. Any form of excretions around the
eyes 3. Missing toes, tail nip 4. No
movement 5. Depressions in back of head
You
should also pay attention where the dragon is kept. If
the place claims poor conditions, there is a good chance
you'll get an animal with a poor health.
